Four-month ramblings

My brain is fried so this is all I got…bullets!

  • The babies go for their 4-month check-ups tomorrow. What I’m thinking a lot about: Champ’s super-flat head on the right side. We shall see what the ped thinks.
  • I had a long list of “projects” to accomplish during maternity leave. HAHAHAHA. (What was I thinking?) I seriously have crossed one off the list.
  • Hubs has been absolutely and totally and completely buried in his dissertation. He hasn’t slept the past two nights because he had a big presentation to give today. He is so tired of it. He is so stressed. This week he has had absolutely no time to help with the babies…no feedings, no bath time, no snuggles, no dipe changes…ay yi yi. I know it’s not good to wish time away, and certainly I don’t with our sweet sweet babies, but I am SO READY for my poor hubs to have completed this @#^*$#@&(@ thing. (Then it’ll be time to stress/worry about the next step: his job applications this Fall!)
  • I have been “training” the nanny for a few hours here and there for the past month. She is wonderful. Calm. Zen. Sweet. Nurturing. Loving. I am so grateful for this.
  • The thing is, though, I do things a certain way. (Ahem, I like to leave the bath water running to circulate the water because Champ always pees when he gets in the baby tub. She just fills it up and turns off the water.) I have been home while she’s been learning the drill and it takes a lot of effort to find the right balance between, This thing is really important to me, versus, You know what? It’s okay if she wants to do it that way. Has anyone else dealt with this?
  • Hubs’s brother and his wife are moving to our city this summer. [Insert cheering!!!!] I love them both so much and am SO SO SO happy we will have family IN THE SAME CITY AS US! They are apartment hunting this weekend and are staying with us from Friday–Monday. So tomorrow is my last day solo with the babies before going back to work.
  • I feel like a ticking time bomb with the going-back-to-work thing. I suspect it will be terribly difficult. I don’t even know, I’m a mess of emotions. But hopefully I’ll at least enjoy having the countdown aspect GONZO.
  • I’m going to pump as long as possible, but am trying to be realistic that I may not last too much longer once I’m working….eeeeesh.
  • Hubs downloaded some pics from our digital camera a few weeks ago and I happened to glance through them today. There is one picture of me in the waiting room at the hospital the night I went into labor. The clock reads 12:47am. I haven’t gone back to triage yet. I am HUUUUUGE. (My gosh, I did NOT remember how big I was!) Puffy. Multiple chins. I have a giant pregnancy-induced blood vessel thing erupting next to my nose. (It had to be cut off two weeks later in a quicky surgery. A whole other blog post. Yuck!) I look so uncomfortable and annoyed at hubs. I was probably in the midst of a serious contraction and little did I know that I was already 10cm dilated and literally a couple of hours away from meeting Champ and Honey. You know what? It’s such an awesome picture, I didn’t even remember hubs taking it!! 🙂
  • All three of my babies are currently sleeping: hubs, Champ and Honey. I love them all so very very very much. I am so incredibly grateful to be exactly where I am.

Yay on brother and sister in law moving to town. I’m sure it’ll be awesome. Good luck to the babies on their check-up tomorrow. One of my nieces has a strange indentation on her head, which my sister worried about but the ped said it was just fine so I’m sure he’s good. Best to hubs too; doesn’t sound fun right now. Work transition is going to suck but you’ll navigate it gracefully and soon get in your groove. Enjoy your last solo day; I know you will.

  2. We have such similar personalities. I abandoned my “maternity leave to-do list” after taking my uber-organized stack of addressed and stamped thank you cards to the hospital with me…I seriously thought I would knock out some shower thank yous while there…hilarious! They are still neatly stacked and now in my kitchen…waiting. Hahaha! That will be great for your hubs to have everything finished. Congrats on such an accomplishment in the midst of major life change!

  3. Don’t fret over your to do list that didn’t get touched. You have had much more important things to tend to lately. If there is anything I have learned from reading mommy blogs is that most of the mommies have to give up control of some things. They have realized that just because something is done differently it’s not necessarily wrong. You will find a happy medium with your nanny and if she is as awesome as she sounds things will work out between the two of you just fine.

I’m so happy that you will have some family close by! Family makes such a difference in our lives and we don’t realize it sometimes until we are far away from them. This was a great update but it’s missing something….pictures. 🙂

  4. lol, yeah, i had a to-do list for my maternity leave also and it remained untouched!

letting go of how you want/like things done is SO hard. i still struggle with that. you’ve just gotta pick your battles and speak up when you must. it’s hard – hard, hard, hard to let go of the reins and let someone else care for your babies in a way that is different than how you would do it. ((()))

I hope going back to work goes smoothly! I am so happy for you about family moving to town, and I agree that looking at photos of the last stage of pregnancy is surreal! (even more for you, having twins!). I have a pic of me, when I first put P to the breast. I don’t know what I am doing, and I am looking OBESE. It is an awesome shot. 🙂

  6. I can’t believe you didn’t complete that to-do list. I’m so ashamed of you! What on EARTH have you been doing with your time? I hope everything goes really well today. I can’t believe they’re four months old!

i highly suspect that you’ll do really well back at work. after the schedule you’ve been used to in the last few months, work doesn’t sound like it’ll be anything in comparison to what you’ve been packing into a day with the little ones! we have night help few nights a week and i hear you about the “i like it done THIS WAY” bit. i’ve learned to let a *few* things just go :o)

  8. Good luck going back to work. The anticipation is generally worse then the actual. As far as how the nanny does things. As long as the kids are safe, fed, diapered and loved. Then I would say don’t worry about it.

  9. You are a rock star!! It sounds like you are handling things great with the nanny. I would be the same way about wanting things done “my way!” So hard to bite your tongue! : ) Good luck with the transition back to work. You are going to do great!

I’m very curious to hear what your ped says about the flat head! I can imagine it would be hard to figure out what you need your nanny to do your way and what isn’t as important without coming across as super controlling. I guess you just have to look at how bad the consequences would be if she did it a different way. And she might also have to learn a few things the hard way!

  11. Maternity leave projects – HA HA HA!! I’m laughing because I did the same thing. Hope all is well from their four-month appointment. I’m so happy that they’re thriving. so beautifully.

  12. the flat head thing is called plagiocephaly. we’re going to cranial tech today 😦 check out their website and compare champ’s pics to those to see if it’s that bad

  13. Good luck to your hubs!

It sounds like all is going pretty well with the babies. That’s really great to hear. I know it will be really hard to turn their care over to the nanny during the day, because you feel like no one can do it as well as you could. I’m going to have that same trouble, I fear. They will be well taken care of, though, and they’re already incredibly loved. Those babies have everything they need.

  14. Sounds like you’ve been crazy busy. The dissertation thing scares me–I wonder how I’ll find the time/money for childcare to ever finish this. But it must be done so I’ll find a way and so will you! You’re doing great. Can’t believe Champ and Honey are so big!

happy 4 months, champ and honey!!!

I’m glad things are going well with the nanny so far and I hope she makes your transition back to work as easy as possible.

  16. How did I miss this post?? In spite of what you call “ramblings” you sound so, so HAPPY. Do you even remember what this weekend was a year ago? You had your IUI today and mine was tomorrow. Of course, mine didn’t work out but you, my friend, look what it created!!!!! This is a great weekend to celebrate!! xoxo

  17. Yea for four months! I can’t believe they are that old already! I hope their appointment goes well! Woot for hub’s brother and his wife moving back to town 😉

  18. i’m in denial about heading back to work at the end of the month, and also about knowing i won’t be able to pump. i’m not entirely sorry, as i hate pumping, but still. brave new world, yeah.

Hey Egg! I’ve been thinking about you and wondering how the going-back-to-work thing is going. Hope it’s going well if you have. I know it’s hard. Anyway, just wanted to say hi since I never got around to commenting on this post. 🙂

Henry has sort of a flat head too. Curious to hear what the ped said about Champ!
